Benjy says...

Hello Rock Fans,

I trust that you enjoyed the John Mayall special last night along with the virtual smorgasbord of classic rock, blues, folk, hard rock, 60's psych, prog and the quite frankly undefinable that constitutes the weekly makeup on Rock of Ages .... I love the 'live' show, there is an energy and vibe that you just don't get when you prerecord, as was the case with this show. I mean ... leaping about to the strains of the Greatest Show on Earth's "Borderline" at 9am, having braved the morning traffic (with rain) only to find that the coffee shop next to the studio is still closed is recommended only to those who have sold their souls to rock 'n roll (or mad dogs and Englishmen) ..... Nonetheless the show must go on!

The Rock of Ages Special

By overwhelmingly popular request this coming Thursday's special will be Live in Concert part 2 - some the greatest bands of all time kicking hard live on stage - Grand Funk Railroad, Rush, Cream, Janis Joplin, Peter Frampton, Allman Brothers, Mountain, Audience, Jeff Beck, The MC5 and many more. Thank you for all your suggestions, I will try to accomodate as many as possible and if it doesn't make it this time? Well, who knows - Part 3 anyone??

Rock of Ages's recommendations

Glass Hammer

The Rockit Scientist, Leon Economides, recently introduced me to one of the leading lights of the new prog-rock movement, the band Glass Hammer. Their most recent album (released in 2005), "The Inconsolable secret" *** is a real earopener - great swathes of keyboard dominated rock spread across 2 cds. The first titled "The Knights" comprises of 2 epic tracks that incorporate nearly every style of prog, from neo-classical that borders on early ELP to more frenetic riffery that brings the work of fellow proggers Spocks Beard and a more pastoral Porcupine Tree to mind. The second cd, "The Lady", comprises of shorter tracks like the folky "Morrigan's Song" and the complex "Having caught a glimpse" - lyrically it's pretty much the JRR Tolkien vibe with lots of fantasy characters and places. Overall a really enjoyable album that reveals more and more with repeated listenings.

Ratings:
***** Volcanic....not to be missed.
**** Seismic....highly recommended...buy it!
*** Aftershock....solid effort.
** Xmas cracker...Pooof!
* Do I need to explain this?

Keep the rock real ...

Benjy

Green Day Sued

Paul McPike from Oregon has filed a lawsuit against Green Day, claiming that he wrote the songs for the band's mega selling 'American Idiot' album. McPike insists that he did this while at college. How then did Green Day get them? According to the lawsuit, they were given to the band by a former friend of his! However, a judge has ruled that there's insufficient evidence for this suit to proceed.

More Classic Rock?

I can highly recommend the About Classic Rock website run by Dave White. Not only does Dave host one of the most knowledgeable classic rock blogs on the Net but the site itself is very entertaining and informative. There are always great indepth stories on the artists and the rock quizzes are addictive. If you are like me, a classic rock fan, then the weekly About Classic Rock newletter is a must. Then Now

Of Scottish origin, Benjy Mudie started out in the music industry working in record shops. He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realms of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music.
